Sharon D. StuartChristian & Small is proud to announce that Partner Sharon D. Stuart has been elected to the Birmingham Bar Association (BBA) Executive Committee, serving Place 3.
“The Birmingham Bar has been an important part of my career – providing wonderful service opportunities, as well as friendship and collegiality with lawyers from all practice areas,” Stuart said. “I am looking forward to helping the Bar provide value to our members while promoting its mission of legal justice and public service.”
Stuart has been active in the Birmingham Bar Association (BBA) since 1996, when she served as Young Lawyers Section Representative to the Grievance Committee. Through the years she has chaired the Ethics Committee, the Civil Courts Procedures Committee, and the Long Range Planning Committee. She has also served on the Public Service and Judicial Liaison Committees, is a member of the Women’s Section, and has served as a mentor through the BBA mentoring program. She is an appointed Member and Secretary of the Bench and Bar Advisory Committee for the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Alabama. Stuart is a Fellow of the Birmingham Bar Foundation, the Alabama Law Foundation, and the American Bar Foundation.
In addition to serving the BBA, Stuart serves the Alabama State Bar (ABS) as a current member of its Strategic Planning Task Force. She has served on the ASB’s Committee for Diversity of the Profession, the Future of the Legal Profession Task Force, the Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee, and is a member of the Women’s Section.
Stuart is Immediate Past President of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association. She is active in the International Association of Defense Counsel, where she currently chairs its Insurance and Reinsurance Committee. She is a member of the Women in the Law Steering Committee for the Defense Research Institute, where she has held numerous positions furthering diversity and women’s initiatives. Stuart is a Master Bencher of both the Arthur D. Shores – Robert S. Vance American Inn of Court (Birmingham) and the Judge James Edwin Horton American Inn of Court (Cumberland School of Law).
Outside the legal community, she serves on Samford University’s Board of Trustees, on the Board of Directors for M-Power Ministries, as a Director of Attorneys Insurance Mutual of the South Risk Retention Group, and formerly as long-time Vice Chair of the Friends Advisory Board for WBHM Public Radio 90.3. She teaches an adult Sunday School class at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and is an alumnus of both Samford University and its Cumberland School of Law. She is a graduate of the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2012, and was named by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of Birmingham’s 2017 “Women to Watch.”
